Underside of my Spit... |

| Frenchy friends, I am making some big decisions about the Spit and wondering if it is worth my time to pull the whole body off of the frame to sand the frame down, prime it and paint it along with the underside of the car. The car is only going to be a weekend driver on sunny days. So is it worth the time and headache to go that far with the project? Thanks for all your help. Shakey Jake. Cincinnati. |

| Very difficult question to answer. It depends mainly on the present state of the underside. If they are currently fine ( no corrosion ), why to bother if you are not changing the car color ? Now the remaining question is: What is an acceptable underside ? The answer is your own. |

| Hello Jack, For my part I decided to let the whole body on the car for the following reasons : -there is not a lot of corrosion on my MKIV -the restoration would be really longuer. I started it 6 months ago with finding another gearbox, changing the clutch, restoring brakes... and I will start the painting in a few days -I wanted to have the car for this summer. -A lot of work for a car not so expensive... For my part, I will change the color. I would be interested to know your final decision. Raph |

| Hi there Jake, to be honnest with you i don't think it's worth the headache if your chassis is in a decent state with no corrosion, then again if you are have plenty of time and a bit of money (and providing that you know what you're doing !) why not ... but bare in mind that it's not such a easy job and that it might be a bit of a struggle to get all the bits (doors, bonnets etc..) to fit correctly, anyway, please let us know whatever decision you take and how your project is going ! | |

Ceci dit, Mado est blonde, j'en suis sûr! je n'ai pas de grottes de nez, mais des crottes, comme tout un chacun, mais je me mouche dans un mouchoir. sorry S.Jake, je ne voulais pas foutre la merde, mais certain(e)s s'y complaisent! Je ne suis pas ici pour chercher des poux dans la tonsure de l'un ou l'autre, si je peux doner un coup de main ou trouver une solution aux questions Spit, ça marche, si on peut rigoler un peu, ok, si ça dérange, pas difficile, je me retire... comme l'a dit un des mes illustres prédécesseurs (admirez ma modestie!) | Hi S. Jake, No one answer to your question. It's a personal judgment call. Just as doing a "full restoration" is a personal judgment call. I personally wouldn't bother without darn good reason. But that's just me. It is a lot of work. But if you're already taking the car far apart for restoration work, I would seriously consider going the last step and doing it all, and doing it right. |

| merci Michel, on n'est sûrement pas des cons du point de vue de Mado (celui auquel nous sommes le plus sensibles!) puisqu'elle nous répond! dire qu'elle a (peut-être) une Triumph, c'est triste à mourrir pour cette pauvre voiture! S'il y a un dieu, elle ira tout droit au paradis! André |

| Greetings everyone, Hi Shakey Jake, If you can take the body off, do it. You can find rust problems you never expected... Now my question : I plan to pull the head on my '72 Spit for a freshening job. Here's the question, the car has to sit outside most of the winter with no head. How do I protect the exposed motor? My thought was to lay several oil soaked rags on it. The bonnett will still be on and a car cover so there's no chance of direct moisture. I'm just concerned about ambient moisture. | The "soaked rags" sounds like a good solution. I knew a car which was preserved that way for over 20 years, like momified. One detail, it has been hidden under menure at the beginning of WWII and "rescued" in the mid 60's. It was not pristine of course, and was still smelling (understatement) grease 20 years later... |
